App icon sizes for iOS and Android
These are the exact icon dimensions BowlerLaunch exports for App Store Connect and Google Play Console. Author one square logo at 1024px, and every density below is a downscale of the same artwork rather than a file you maintain by hand.

Store icons
These two are the assets a submission is rejected without. Apple wants a flat 1024px square with no alpha; Google wants a 512px PNG that does allow alpha. Everything else on this page is generated for the device, not the storefront.
| Asset | Size (px) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| App Store icon (iOS) | 1024 × 1024 | Required. Since Xcode 14 this single asset covers every iOS size |
| Play Store listing icon | 512 × 512 | Required. 32-bit PNG with alpha |
Android launcher icon (legacy)
The flattened ic_launcher bitmap, based on 48dp and scaled per density bucket. Older launchers still fall back to it, so it ships alongside the adaptive layers rather than instead of them.
| Density | Size (px) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| mipmap-mdpi | 48 × 48 | — |
| mipmap-hdpi | 72 × 72 | — |
| mipmap-xhdpi | 96 × 96 | — |
| mipmap-xxhdpi | 144 × 144 | — |
| mipmap-xxxhdpi | 192 × 192 | Highest density — ship this one at minimum |
Android adaptive icon layers
The adaptive icon splits into a foreground and a background layer, each 108dp, so the system can mask and animate it. That is why these numbers are larger than the legacy set at the same density — the extra area is bleed, not detail.
| Density | Layer size (px) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| mipmap-mdpi | 108 × 108 | 108dp baseline — the inner 72dp is the safe zone |
| mipmap-hdpi | 162 × 162 | — |
| mipmap-xhdpi | 216 × 216 | — |
| mipmap-xxhdpi | 324 × 324 | — |
| mipmap-xxxhdpi | 432 × 432 | — |
The safe zone
Launchers mask adaptive icons into a circle, squircle, or rounded square, and you do not get to choose which. Only the centre 72×72dp of the 108×108dp canvas is guaranteed to survive that mask, so keep your mark inside it and treat the outer 18dp on each side as bleed. A logo that fills the full canvas will be clipped on most devices.
How to get every size from one logo
- Author the mark once on a square canvas at 1024×1024 or larger.
- Position it inside the safe zone so the adaptive mask cannot crop it.
- Export the store icons, then every density bucket, from that one source.
- Add the dark, tinted, and monochrome appearances from the same artwork.
That is the workflow the icon studio here automates — packaged for Expo, Flutter, or a native project, next to the splash screen and the screenshot deck that ship with it.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I still need to generate every iOS icon size?
- No. Since Xcode 14, a single 1024x1024 asset in the App Icon set is enough — Xcode derives the home screen, Spotlight, and Settings sizes at build time. You only add extra entries when a specific size needs its own artwork.
- What is the Android adaptive icon safe zone?
- The adaptive icon layers are 108x108dp, but the launcher can mask them into a circle, squircle, or rounded square. Only the centre 72x72dp is guaranteed to stay visible, so keep your mark inside that area and treat the outer 18dp on each side as bleed.
- What is the difference between the legacy and adaptive icon?
- The legacy icon (ic_launcher) is a single flattened 48dp-based bitmap used by older launchers. The adaptive icon splits into a foreground and background layer at 108dp so the system can mask and animate it. Ship both: the density table above covers each.
- Can the App Store icon have transparency or rounded corners?
- No. The 1024x1024 App Store icon must be flat RGB with no alpha channel and square corners — Apple applies its own rounding. The Play Store listing icon is the opposite: a 32-bit PNG that does allow alpha.
- Do I need dark and tinted icon variants?
- They are optional, but iOS 18 and later will otherwise derive a tinted version automatically, which rarely matches a considered design. BowlerLaunch exports light, dark, tinted, and monochrome variants from the same source so the appearance set stays coherent.
- What resolution should I design the source logo at?
- Design at 1024x1024 or larger, on a square canvas, in vector or a high-resolution raster. Every smaller density is a downscale, so the largest asset is the only one that has to be authored — that is exactly how the icon studio here works.
Apple and Google both revise icon requirements between platform releases. Confirm against their official specifications before a submission if it has been a while since your last release.
